Don’t Let Circumstances
Define Your Academic Future

University is hard enough without unexpected illness, mental health struggles, or personal tragedy getting in the way. If you are a Monash University student facing a short-term setback, you do not have to handle it alone.

Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, sudden illness, grief, or trauma, you may be eligible for an extension with Special Consideration. To access this support, the university requires specific, professional documentation that clearly outlines how your ability to study has been impacted.

That is where we come in. We provide the professional counselling support you need, along with the supporting letters required by Monash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Registered counsellors are not medical doctors, so we cannot write a medical certificate. We cannot provide supporting documents for physical illnesses such as:
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Cold, flu, COVID-19
  • Migraine
  • Infection
  • Fever, etc.

If your main issue is a physical illness, you will need evidence like a medical certificate from a doctor or medical clinic (for example a GP or hospital).

Special Consideration only gives you an extension for your assessment deadline, for instance resitting a test at a later date because you are sick and unable to complete it on the day. You cannot get an extension for an assessment that you’ve already submitted by the due date.

Yes. If our counsellor assesses that your level of distress is clinically significant and impacting your ability to complete assessments, we can document this in a practitioner certificate.

If you’re unable to access official documents to demonstrate your circumstances, such as a death certificate, this is completely understandable. In such cases, a statutory declaration combined with a letter of support from a counsellor is considered sufficient evidence under the Special Consideration guidelines.
Our experienced counsellors can offer guidance on wording for statutory declarations to meet Special Consideration’s’ strict criteria.

Extensions are based purely on the dates within supporting documents relative to your due date. For instance, if your assessment is due on the 5th, and you have a practitioner certificate that says you were unfit for study from the 4th to the 7th, your new due date will be the 9th.

If Monash rejects your Special Consideration application, don’t panic — this is common, and there are clear next steps.

  1. Forward us the rejection email
Send us Monash’s rejection email so we can review the reason they gave.

  2. We check whether there’s a problem with the document
If there is an error or missing detail in the supporting document, we will amend it or provide supplementary clarifications as required.

  3. If the document is sound, request a Stage 1 Review
If the supporting document is appropriate, we will advise you to reply to Monash and ask for a Stage 1 Review of the decision.

  4. If Stage 1 is rejected, request Stage 2
If Monash rejects the Stage 1 Review, you can then request a Stage 2 Review.

  5. If Stage 2 is rejected, request Stage 3
If needed, you can continue to a Stage 3 Review. We will guide you through each step.

If Special Consideration is approved late (for example, near the end of teaching period or after results are released), Monash can adjust your result and remove late penalties after the fact.

The key thing is don’t give up! Many applications are approved on review rather than the first submission. We’ll continue supporting you through each stage of the process.
